I suppose it is a huge mistake! May be somebody has forgotten, but backgammon is in the first line a game FOR MONEY! The problem of the first tournament organizers was that they unfortunately not found fair format of competition for the backgammon tournaments. I don't want explain why, because in this case I should to repeat my book "Fair Backgammon Tournament Rules". I simple let you know, that last format of backgammon tournaments with prize fund sharing can be the correct answer for question "who ist the best one?", because it combines both types of this game: preliminary competition of 7 rounds of money games + final for the best 8 players - double-elimination. For the rest of players could be possible to promote consolation - double- elimination too (for example). In any case I can prove, that for such format of competition on the top of the 8 best players will be coming really the most experience and good players. Who of them will be the winner and second or third prize winners is not important. BUT IT IS VERY IMPORTANT THAT THESE PLAYERS MUST BE ON THE TOP AT ANY TOURNAMENT WITH SUCH FORMAT! And there is only one absolutely real, fair and correct parameter or characteristic which allow us to make fair rating system for players - MONEY! Any other is artificial and has nothing to do with reality! Last spring session of Ukraine Open Online is the first demonstration: Mochy and Michy were on the top in both competitions: in preliminary and in final. They have lost some matches, but it could not affected at their sum results. Impossible for another kind of competition! Read their opinions. http://ukraineopenbg.at.ua/forum/2
