Chuck: The problem with backgammon tournament attendance is generated by those who AREN'T showing up.

There are backgammon players who attend no weekend tournaments. Some of these are easy to find and survey: they play in local clubs. There are backgammon players who have been to one or more weekend tournaments but don't go to very many. Some of these players can be found (and surveyed) at local clubs, too.

503 players have only attended 1 USBGF-rated tournament in 4 and 1/2 years. Why? What, if anything might induce them to play more often?

From the USBGF ratings list (http://usbgf.org/member-ratings/). Tournament attendance would be more transparent if the rating list gave the number of tournaments attended in addition to the number of events. A person who has played in two events may have attended two tournaments or one. Still, it's clear that someone who has played in only one event has only been to one tournament.
