This would be an excellent survey if you divided the questions into two categories: people who are top level players and hope or expect to make money when they go to a tournament; and people who are not.

The problem is we are offering a single tournament and trying to accommodate both kinds of players. The players in the first category, who are willing to pay more and spend more and travel more because they have a reasonable chance at an expected payoff, or because their lifestyle and income allow them to spend more money to go to and play in backgammon tournaments, will give you very different answers from "casual" and "less-skilled" players. This first category of players are generally your giants and others who play at or near that level and are truly "professional" level players.

I have always advocated a professional division, or true "masters" division that has larger entry fees and larger, optional side pools, calcuttas, parimutuals etc. etc. and even money added if it can be found; and another tournament for the rest of the backgammon population that is NOT about winning money, but about ratings and point standings and competition and winning a nice trophy, in several divisions, of course, so that everyone has a reasonable chance to win at their skill-level. The entry fees could be very small as there would be little or no payout of cash for these divisions. (Don't tell me people won't come...just look at the thousands of people who go to bridge tournaments and pay nice entry fees just to compete for points and the fun of playing.)

And of course, I also advocate a true novice division where people can bring their spouses, kids, and friends that don't know the game to just learn...not compete at all, or compete on a very casual level.

This is how to get the numbers up and grow tournament play and the game overall.
