Blue leads 2-away 5-away, the cube is centered, Blue is up 17 pips in the race after a nonhitting play, White has a take point of about 20%, and Blue may still have good chances for an undoubled gammon next turn against the two unanchored checkers. I think Blue wants to have the luxury next turn of choosing to double White in, double White out, or play on for gammon for another turn. Blue won't have those options nearly as often if Blue plays 8/4*/3*, since that puts Blue on the bar next turn 1/3 of the time.
