Attendance at ABT tournaments (not "events")

1. My interest here is getting a handle on how often people attend ABT tournaments -- not "events" -- in the past 3 and 1/2 years.

Explanation: My data is drawn from the USBGF rating list and from USBGF individual player profiles. I referred to the profiles because the rating list gives the number of rated "events" attended, but not the number of tournaments attended. With both the number of tournaments attended and the number of events attended, it is possible to determine two additional pieces of data: Master Points earned per tournament attended, and Events attended per tournament attended.

Almost always, if a player has attended only one event at a tournament, it is the main event (on rare occasions a player may enter the Masters but not the main tournament). If two, the main event and either the Masters or similar, or a Limited Jackpot or similar. If three, a player as most likely entered the main event, the Masters, and a Limited Jackpot, A few tournaments offer a fourth rated event besides the main, the Masters or similar and a Limited jackpot or similar.

2. There are about 20 ABT tournaments each year.

Explanation: USBGF lists 63 tournaments from 2009 through 15 May 2012. There were 20 ABT tournaments in 2009, of which USBGF rated 13; 19 rated tournaments in 2010; 21 rated tournaments in 2011; and 10 rated tournaments in 2012 through May 15, of which the rating of the most recent two tournaments is incomplete (2012 Florida Backgammon Championships and 2012 Atlanta Spring Classic). In two cases, the USBGF counts concurrent tournaments at the same venue as two tournaments -- the January 2012 5th New York Metropolitan Open and the USBGF National Championships - East, and the June 2011 Los Angeles Open and the USBGF National Championships. I have counted each of these pairs as one tournament (because they are in the same time and same place and because they appear as a single red line on individual player profiles).

USBGF-Rated Tournaments

So, 63 rated tournaments, at 61 time/venues, plus 7 unrated ABT tournaments in 2009, equals 68 tournaments in about three and 1/2 years, or about 20 per year.

3. Frequency of attendance.

PlayersPercentageAttendance at Tournaments per year, 2009 through May 2012
9 00.7%10 or more tournaments per year
10 00.7%about 8 or 9 tournaments per year
20 01.4%about 6 or 7 tournaments per year
51 03.6%about 4 or 5 tournaments per year
54 03.8%about 3 tournaments per year
106 07.4%about 2 tournaments per year
309 21.6%about 1 tournaments per year
868 60.8%less than 1 tournament per year
1427

Explanation: This is an approximation. I've taken attendance at 3 tournaments to mean 1 per year, and so on, e.g., attendance at 12 tournaments in all to mean 4 per year. Obviously individual patterns of attendance vary. Exact tournament attendance is as follows:

Total tournaments attended 2009 (partial) - May 2012

4 93 (6.5%)
3 147 (10.3%)
2 252 (17.6%)

Total 1427

The USBGF rating list has 1432 entries, which is not correct. I think 1427 is correct.
