It's probably very similar.

However, I'd expect that when backgammon was on a surge in Denmark, the culture here is to organize, make a working federation and open clubs. More of a "leisure" and "social" take on things than a "business" one.

That's what made BG stick as a success here for a longer period, enabling us to produce the relatively high number of strong players.

The team league as an example: Current BG throughput is around 3500 17 point matches in a season. At the peak it was 7000+ 17 point matches. That's a lot of serious backgammon. Add to that, the benefit of the teams/clubs, where players actively recruit new players for their teams (not just for the community - the incentive is clearly not the same), and where players help each other improve their game.

Why do I post all of this info about DBgF, on a forum that primarily discuss US backgammon?

Because I think that a lot can be learned from our successes AND our failures.

Because I think there are misconceptions around the world as to DBgF being healthy as ever, when we've actually gone through our toughest period yet.

Because I think that the challenge we're facing going forward, is approx. the same in many parts of the world (bringing in new blood, simply getting more backgammon played). I think backgammon would be universally much stronger, if we got success across the globe in different federations, AND if we could improve international attendance and cooperation. It would help in the creation a more "big names" in the sport, which is always a plus public relations wise.

And finally, because I'm of the impression, that what USBGF should really focus on now, is not the ABT, the Pros or the big money... but the lower levels and local players - exactly what got the snowball rolling in the DBgF 20 years ago and produced the success!
