If you, instead of playing with your wand mr. Potter, put your mind and will to it, it's really not that crazy a thought.

Of course, this needs to be coordinated and you need to distribute the responsibilities to a lot of people - sort of a divide and conquer. Of course, the USBGF would need to put together an outline for the tournament, secure sponsorships, etc. to begin with, but once done, you need one or two "directors" at each regional venue, that will be the coordinating contacts for each local cafe-club-bar-diner-etc. (from here on cafe) and for the regional finals, effective taking a part of the tourney, sending one winner back to the grand national finals.

When we ran the similar tour in Denmark, it was prepared like this: There were a package sent to each local site, containing stickers, posters, etc for the tour to put up in the cafe. Sheets for signing up, doing the draw (including a "random draw wheel" which could be a simple sheet as weel), and for keeping masterpoints. Some sets of the official tournament rules. An introductory letter to the TD at the site, in laymans terms describing the tournament structure, ow to sign up people and do the draw, and how to keep scores. And finally the prizes for the local cafe winners, and a sheet to fill in for the person moving on to the final.

The local qualifiers were simple cup tournaments to 5 points, 4,2,1,1 master points for winners and semis. 16 players per sheet. If more players came, you just split into more than one sheet, giving 4,2,1,1 for winners of each sheet. DOUBLE master points on the fifth and final week (8,4,2,2), to keep players coming back still with a chance to win.

Now, the cafes was also offered a luxury package (for which they had to pay extra) that contained a number of backgammon boards. All boards sold to the cafes was boards with the sponsor logo's and tournament name printed on them (Carlsberg boards). Such a board was also the first prize for the local winner, who moved on to the finals.

Finally, it was organized so that each local cafe had a DBgF member present (preferably as the local TD, otherwise as a player), who were willing to assist in solving any problems, helping new players, etc. And there was a "hotline" for local cafes to call, in case they had any problems that they couldn't figure out how to solve.

I cannot see how a similar tournament shouldn't be possible to pull of in the US, scaled up to say 16 times the size (you can easily find 16 urban areas with a larger population than Copenhagen). It's "just" a matter of will and investment of voluntary hours for the USBGF.

Someone suggested that you started to charge a little ABT entry fee, to go to the USBGF to raise funds for initiatives like this. Maybe that's the way to make progress, since you could then pay some symbolic compensation to the people pulling the load.
