Two questions for strong players

At one point all the very strong players who post on this forum were themselves just intermediate plodders like the rest of us.

Two questions directed at very strong players for the benefit of the rest of us -

a) What happened that made you want to move your game up to a very strong level ?

b) What did you find were the most effective things you did to make the transition upwards?
