I would have played 8/3 5/1 without thinking about it very hard. Play off the 8 to prepare to clear it, then play off the 5 to leave two checkers on the 6. That way I can play N1 safely twice no matter what N is as long as N != 6.

I can't see leaving a spare on the 8, nor can I justify volunteering a shot. 8/4 6/1 looks prettier, but it leaves a small number of shot leaving rolls.

I would have also doubled before rolling, but that's just me. (c:
