If you were going to always double after reaching the two men on the eight point position, there would be absolutely no jeopardy in playing 6-1,5-1. If your opponent rolls very well you can cash, otherwise you root for a clearing double, which allows you to play on. There is a very small chance for a gammon, but it is a free roll. But, this assumes that you will always double when you have two men on the eight point. Is it right? Since you only get hit immediately 11/648 =1.69%, you probably get hit less than 2% overall, meaning you need to win something less than 2.6% gammons to make it right to play-on. Can you win 2.6% gammons? I think so. The right play is likely 8-4, 6-1 and then cash if your opponent rolls well, otherwise play-on.
