Thanks, Miran. I was half-hoping that your rollout results would contradict mine, since I've not had too much luck making heads or tails of them!

The one thing that I think is clear is that White has considerable counterattacking chances here that cannot be ignored. If you can calculate your way through the maze of possibilities, then you can play bar/20 or bar/23 6/3* if the particular configuration of White checkers allows it. But for mere mortals, the message seems to be that anchoring is the safest way to stymie White's counterattack. If we look at all three positions together, we see that bar/22 8/6 is at worst a 0.03 error, whereas bar/20 or bar/23 6/3* could be a whopper if you're not careful.
