I agree about bots killing the action. In the 80's and early 90's, after about the top 10 or 15 players in the world, there was a pretty wide talent chasm that separated the rest of the players. At an ABT Open tournament, you might have six or seven players in attendance that could play under a 6 consistently. The average PR in an Open event was likely 8 or 9. Props and large money choues were common.

Today, an ABT Open event might have close to half the field playing under 6 and only a few that play above an 8 or 9. The props and side-action are non-existent, for the most part. But, backgammon has become more of an intellectual and social pursuit. This website, the USBGF and it's Collegiate and Online National Championships, as well as it's National Interclub Championships, and many other exciting online events, hosted by various sites and organizations have blossomed. Backgammon is becoming organized and hopefully that will make it grow. It may not be good, right now, for people that need to make a living from it, but it is enjoyable for the majority and is helping bring new players to the game, which should, eventually, help the better players earn from the game via books, lessons, aps, etc. Backgammon is much more studied and more social now.
