Seems like it's usually a good idea to whack the second checker in these positions: 1) when your opponent is playing containment, 2) has a somewhat cheesy board, and 3) has flooded the outfield with vulnerable blots. If White doesn't hit back on the 1-point then Blue stands a good chance of either covering that blot and securing the point, or hitting another checker in the outfield, or both. Lots of gammons will follow if any of those fine things happen for Blue. Even if hit back on the 1-point Blue still has prospects, particularly if he can re-enter right away and maybe re-it, or even just jump out and threaten havoc in the outfield while White (likely) still has one on the bar.
