When Should Intermediates Move into the Open?

I started playing backgammon in late 2008 I have now decided to play open only after several intermediate cashes. I am just curious to see what different opinions are on when intermediates should move up voluntarily. Also Should Intermediates be forced into playing in the open after they Cash multiple times? If so how many times? Should it be big tournament cashes only that count?

On the flipside Should intermediates avoid moving up into the open to soon?
