He he Bob, I suppose the Tivo-part was a joke, since the word "Epilogue" didn't tip you off, that results could be mentioned...
But the other part of your post is interesting, how many competitors there are in a given sport - and also, as Chuck mentions, how many "shots" you get, in a given sport.
Now, swimming is probably a bad example to bring up, since it is one of the largest sports of all I'd think. But there are many other disciplines at the Olympics that are more narrow. Which Olympic sports would you think has the smallest base of competitive players? Equestrian? Canoe rafting?
And how would it be possible to "even out" the number of medals won by an athlete, considering the number of events he might enter? Eg. Swimming is one of the obvious sports where winning 4 medals isn't such a big deal, as in many other. For sprinters it's the same: 100m 200m 4x100m and even long jump is related. Could you devise a formula to normalize medals between sports? I mean the best basketball player in the world, would not be able to win more than 5 medals in a lifetime. Something Phelps would be able to do in just one showing.... A Swimmer that wins one gold medal at each Olympic game - can he be called "dominant", like if he had been a tri-athlete? I suppose not!
