Thanks to Toby & Phil, Directors of the Golden Gate Open in SF

Tobias Hellwag and Phil Simborg served wonderfully as directors in the Golden Gate Open tournament. The tournament ran very smoothly, a good time was had by all, and shots of tequilla (to salve the pain) were awarded to anyone who rolled “Double-six from the Bar” against a one-point board. Phil did an incredible job coaching the beginners, and also hosted a Saturday morning seminar. When I asked him on Sunday why he doesn’t look haggard like me, he smiled, and replied, “I only need 5 to 6 hours of sleep a night.” Believe me, that is all either of us got. On a personal note, by losing the first backgammon of the tournament, I earned for my opponent a special $30 hospitality discount at the upcoming Pittsburgh tourney. Way to go! Mike
