This looks like a great system, and much more practical than (my suggestion of) precisely adjusting everyones stake up or down according to whether or not they got a bye.

It will mean, however, that players receiving a bye are actually at a slight disadvantage. Putting aside whether it is better to be fresh or to have had a warm-up match - depending upon the exact entry and the way the draw is arranged - bye players will be facing winners in their tournament, rather than a random selection of the other players.

To reduce this effect, bye players should play other bye players in the First Round Proper. If you had six players then say, the two players drawing the byes should play each other in the semi finals. To keep them busy, you could even arrange that such players play a longer match, and this would also negate any advantage of being 'fresher'.
