As for tourneys and match play, I recommend keeping it simple and going with the standard Tournament Rules. They can be printed or pulled up on any smart phone here: http://www.chicagopoint.com/usrules.html
As for chouettes, I recommend agreeing to a default set of rules that are most commonly used at your club. If anyone wants to make any changes to the default set, then they can agree to do so before the chouette begins, and make a note of such adjustments on the score sheet.
For example, here's the default rule set used in Los Angeles...
@ Individual cubes - yes
@ Jacoby Rule - yes
@ Beavers/Raccoons - yes
@ Box choice on autos - yes (but only one)
@ Carryovers - no
@ Extras - yes
@ Consulting - never
@ Minimum box can take is at least half the cubes (on first cube turn only, and only on initial cube turn) - yes
@ First cube taken must be Captain's (no head hunting) - yes
@ Partner optional when 6 handed, and mandatory when 7 handed - yes
Here are a few adjustments we see at times...
@ When 3 handed, box must take both or drop both (no taking one and dropping the other).
@ When 4 or more handed, minimum box can take is enough to break even if he wins without further cube turns.
@ A handful of players don't play Autos or Beavers, and they make it known before joining.
These rules are designed primarily to keep the game moving at a reasonable pace.
