I think Timothy has a valid point here about using ELO to demonstrate the importance of skill.
One way of going about this would be for one of our backgammon playing mathematicians, of which there are several, to use ELO to show the importance of skill. First explain what ELO is and how it measures success. Then, compare the rankings of top players that participate on several sites, such as GridGammon, FIBS, SHG, etc. It can be shown that the top players consistently earn high rankings and the weaker players the opposite. If backgammon were not a game of skill this would not be true.
You can, also, to establish the importance of skill in a single match, using the ELO calculator, show the odds of the lowest ranked player on GridGammon (978) beating the highest ranked player (2038) in a 25 point match = .22% or about 2 out of 1000. If luck predominated skill, this figure would be much higher. I am sure there are many other ways to demonstrate the skill level in backgammon using ELO.
