Popularity of a game has nothing to do with how much work it takes to become a top player. Popularity is a social phenomenon. People get interested in a game if it is prestigious (prestige is closely tied to how much money the top players make), or if they can get social enjoyment out of watching or playing the game with other people.

Knowing that they'll never be Ronaldo doesn't stop people from watching and playing soccer.
