"backgammon" on Google search declining

Surely the main reason why people play games/sports is because they are fun, rather than because that game is prestigious? Soccer is fun, so people play it on a Sunday morning despite the fact they know they can never emulate Ronaldo.
Some people understandably discover that playing backgammon is fun. Even doing pip counts can become fun - when we learn the tricks to doing them fairly quickly. But working out a redoubling window or gammon price is few peoples idea of fun.
As poseidon effectively states, recognising patterns and remembering (reference) positions can take us quite a long way - we can even luck out in major tournaments. But I can understand why, when a novice discovers - perhaps early in his journey - what is required to master match play as it is currently played, that his journey might end.
