Prestige doesn't necessarily enter consciously into people's decisions, but it has a powerful indirect influence. You say that people play soccer because it's fun, but why is soccer not one of the "major" U.S. sports, even though it's a major sport in almost every other country in the world? Why is American football a "major" U.S. sport but not a major sport almost anywhere else? You can stare at the rules for both games until your eyes fall out and you will not discover the reasons, which have to do with the esteem accorded to the sport by the societies in which they are played. People will find soccer (or whatever) fun if they can find people to play with, and if people respect them when them play well, and both of these are functions of the prestige accorded to the sport.

Certainly there are some people who reach a point where they become discouraged at what it takes to be a backgammon expert, and drop out. What I'm saying is that this is true of every game or sport, and has nothing to do with backgammon in particular. Since it's equally true of popular sports/games and unpopular sports/games, it cannot possibly explain popularity/unpopularity.
