This thread, however, is whether or not we can have a separate system that rates the Open players based on their performance in both the Open and Masters events.

For a ranking based on performance (that is, placing) in both Master and Open events, you'd have to decide how many points to award to players who place in Masters events, relative to points awarded in Open events. But here is a ranking for performance (placing) in Masters events only in 2012. I've awarded points according to the table that follows the ranking list.

Name Points
Bill Phipps 40
Howard Markowitz23.875
Victor Ashkenazi23.5
Justin Nunez 20

Matvey Natanzon 13
Kit Woolsey 10

(Players in event includes rebuys, points awarded are not "calibrated" to other tournament events, and only placers named at the chicagopoint.com results pages got points.)

Note that only two players, Howard Markowitz and Victor Ashkenazi, make the Top 10 in both this ranking of Masters performance and in the final ABT standings based on main event performance.
