Poker vs. backgammon on TV

I agree that poker has an advantage, but I don't think the problems you mention for backgammon are insurmountable.
1. Backgammon isn't that hard to understand, and good commentators can compensate for that.
2. Backgammon could be slowed down by introducing longer time controls.
3. Bluffing is the tough one, but I heard a suggestion by Sander Lylloff that sounded promising. When it's the turn of a player with cube access, the player rolls the dice, peeks at them, and then has the option to double. The opponent must take or drop without getting to see the dice. (Of course the TV audience will get to see the dice.) This new rule will slow down the game, which is good. The big problem, of course, is that top players might not like the rule. It certainly changes the game. But if the monetary incentives are sufficient, then I think players will accept the variant rule.
