Unique Dual-Duel Event in San Antonio

The Dual-Duel Tournament at the 2013 Texas Backgammon Championships in San Antonio on January 31 thru February 3 has generated considerable interest and should be an exciting, unique new event format.

Ideally, we will have sixteen players. A random draw, valid for the entirety of the tournament, will be used to fill the bracket. The eight, eleven-point, first round matches will be recorded while played and analyzed on XG. The eight score-based winners will advance into a bracket of eight to be played to conclusion based solely on match scores within eleven-point matches. The eight PR-based winners will advance into a bracket of eight to be played to conclusion based solely on best PR within eleven-point matches. A player, as the result of a first round match, may advance into either or both of the score-based and the PR-based brackets -- or may not advance at all. The two ultimate winners, if not the same player, will then play for the Dual-Duel championship. To win a player must prevail both by score and by PR within a single match. The first championship match is eleven points; a second, if required, is seven points; a third, if required, is three points; and, thereafter, if necessary, DMP games will be utilized. Analysis results do not carry over in any manner -- each match is independent. Independent side pools, entered prior to the first round matches, will be available for both the score-based bracket and the PR-based bracket. The Dual-Duel championship round will not affect the side pools.

The PR-related matches will be entered into XG while being played. Analysis settings will specify XGR+ analysis for first passes, XGR++ for second passes, and a gigantic search interval. Typically, results should be available almost immediately upon the conclusion of each match. Due to the advanced strength level of the analysis and the time considerations for the advancement of the tournament, no appeals or further analysis will be allowed. Best PR with these settings advances. In the highly unlikely event of a PR tie, the match winner on score will advance.

Recorded matches will be played as 'legal moves' only, with the recorder obligated to call attention to illegal moves.

The four semifinalists (two in the score-based bracket, two in the PR-based bracket) will each receive 12.5%. The two bracket winners will each receive another 12.5%. The championship winner will receive the remaining 25%. A single player can advance throughout each bracket. Should one player win both brackets, a championship match will not be required -- the winner will receive a total of 75%, the two losing semifinalists 12.5% each.

Should two players happen to have matches against each other in both the score-based bracket and the PR-based bracket they may mutually agree to play a single match counting for both; however, the default will be that both matches must be played.

Players may be required to assist in the tournament, if necessary, by recording, if equipped and capable, one match played by other players. All participants should bring, if possible, a tournament-sized board, a clock, and a laptop equipped with XG.

Select matches, as chosen by the Tournament, will be streamed on-line for the benefit and enjoyment of the global backgammon community. The tournament will archive all resultant match files but will not commercialize the match files in any way. The tournament will also not make any match files public unless specifically authorized to do so by both participants of a given match. Obviously, streamed matches enter the public domain.

If you have not received a brochure, one can be downloaded at texasbackgammon.com.
