How automatic is the double at 3-away, 1-away, post Crawford?

I hope all the USBGF members out there are competing in the several free tournaments now running. If not, you won’t have to wait long. There is a “Circuit Monthly” tournament starting —you guessed it! — every month.
In my Director’s Cup match today, trailing 3-away, 1-away, post Crawford, I chose not to double automatically. I waited until a small gammon threat appeared, and then tossed the cube hoping to steal a game without having the hit the shot. Was I crazy?
