What, if anything, can other games teach us?

We can improve our knowledge of backgammon by studying the game in more depth but can we also become better backgammon players indirectly from what we learn from other games?

Some of the top backgammon players are also accomplished players of other games. Kit Woolsey is an expert Bridge player. Gus Hansen is a world class Poker player. Alongside his books on Backgammon Bill Robertie has published books on both Poker and Chess. Nack Ballard is not only a Giant of Backgammon but is also one of the top western Go players.

I would be interested in knowing if any backgammon players have found that they have improved their backgammon by playing other games and if so what did those other games teach that was transferable to backgammon?
