Blue to play 32

With 2 blots exposed in XG’s inner board, it is tempting to take a risk to improve our position. Of the candidates below, I (Inside) is the safe play. The others all volunteer some shots in an effort to improve.

  • D (Down) = 13/8 starts the 8pt, a point we could use. It also keeps our checkers in front of XG’s anchor. I don’t like this play as much as n (near), because it leaves only one point, our midpoint, as a place from which we might cover on the next turn. Most likely, we would end up running from the 8pt into our inner board on the following turn.
  • E (Each) = 15/13 6/3 has the attraction of clearing the anchor we don’t want, but stacks a second dilly builder on the 3pt. Unlike n (near), XG could hit without having to break a point.
  • I (Inside) = 6/1 is safe, but runs another checker beyond XG’s anchor.
  • n (near) = 13/10 3/1 unstacks our dilly builder, and slots the 1pt, a point we may want to make as this mutual holding game progresses. It also puts a spare on an outside point that we might like to make. On the next turn, if our blot has not been hit, we may have a choice to cover it by breaking either the 13pt or 15pt.
  • R (Run) = 20/15 is interesting. The blot left behind is relatively safe. XG has only one spare within direct range. This is a play that would deserve serious consideration if we were ahead in the race. But we are not.
  • S (Split) = Z (Reverse split) = 15/10 is the pure play. It breaks the point I would like to get rid of most, and keeps the checkers in front of XG.

Some interesting choices. I’ll go with n, hoping to make the 10pt next time. The risk is moderate. XG must pay with his anchor to hit.

n (near) = 13/10, 3/1
