I think the answer is that Lamford's formula just doesn't work well.

I too was hoping a strong player would spill the beans on this one, but no such luck.

Zare has a Gammon Village article on this. But, I found no clear formula and generally speaking his math emphasis is over my head anyway.

Kleinman also has a reference in one of his old books - I forget which. He created table of gammons per number of outside pips. Don't know how accurate this is either but it looks pretty good. Better than nothing. Probably memorize a few key points and interpolate.

I don't know how to post a table -and maybe I shouldn't anyway. Buy Kleinman's book?
