White is Player 2

score: 0
pip: 144
7 point match
pip: 158
score: 0

Blue is Player 1

Blue to play 43

Here are a couple of sometimes conflicting issues:

  • Blue will trail in the race by about a roll and half after this turn. That indicates hanging back with at least one checker.
  • Blue has already split his rear checkers. “Resplitting” is often unnecessary, especially when a roll can be used productively elsewhere. Unstacking the midpoint certainly qualifies.
  • White has 9 rolls that make his 5pt. That argues for grabbing that point before White does.
Perhaps the best way to balance these is to play Z (Reverse split) = 23/20 13/9. White will be under pressure to clean up his blots, and in case he cannot, White may be forced into an exchange of hits. If Blue is hit, he will usually have immediate return shots, and even when he misses those, falling back another 5 pips in the race is not the end of the world.
