Casper :
B/18 and Stick is right in the sense that this is at the very least thematic. Blue is behind in the race, White has vulnerable blots in a few spots, Blue would love to force an exchange of hits sending another checker back, and the safe vs bold criteria show that a bold play can be considered. B/18 makes it difficult for White to hide the blots and is the most likely to force an exchange of hits. It must therefore be the right play here.
Agreed and also:
It steps out of the way of the good pointing 66 and 55 and turns these in to poor rolls.
And if white rolls one of the (non-hitting) blot clean up numbers blue will have many rolls that will put the checker on the 18 to better use by moving it in to the outfield.
