PR tournament. Clock time out. Ruling?

Bob --
Was there a comprehensive, exhaustive, written set of rules for the Dual-Duel Tournament prior to the event? No. Should there have been? To some extent, yes. Will there be in the future? Yes.
I say 'to some extent' because everyone's interpretation of what constitutes a comprehensive set of rules is different. I'm confident that no one can anticipate absolutely every potential circumstance and visualize every permutation of backgammon play.
With the Dual-Duel Tournament at the 2013 Texas Backgammon Championships in San Antonio we had a new event, new directors, and a new tournament. We strived to do everything as well as we could. Were we perfect? No. Will we make refinements to this event and the entire tournament next year based on our experiences of this year? Yes. Will we consequently be perfect next year? No. But we will always strive to refine and improve.
I am comfortable and confident with the ruling made at the conclusion of the event. As Phil has noted, my position prior to the event was clear. At the conclusion of the match, in ruling, I think I was thorough, deliberate, and thoughtful in considering the input of all parties and in reviewing the facts -- I did not want to make a rush judgment. We had the video-record reviewed to determine what, if any, effect the 'pause' had on the time at the end of the match. Beyond that, the facts were not really in dispute by anyone. I listened to input and opinion from several prominent players, including several participants in the event. In consideration of all, I ruled the match over and Akiko the champion.
Everyone I have spoken with subsequently, without exception, has supported the ruling. Not one person has dissented or objected to the ruling.
I think both Matt and Akiko are to be applauded for their accomplishments in reaching the final. Matt posted what is probably one of the greatest PR's ever (0.99) in a meaningful match of length in the first round -- it should go down as legend. Akiko prevailed over a string of Giants (O'Laughlin, Petko, and Mochy) to win the score-based bracket; she led Matt 10-8/11 in the playoff. Matt led something like 2.8 to 3.6 in PR in the playoff.
Matt took the ruling, his error (in letting the clock expire), and his loss like the gentleman he is.
I really despise anyone questioning the validity of Akiko's superlative performance and championship. She doesn't deserve an asterisk, she deserved the trophy -- and she has it.
