There is an existing backgammon program (Backgammon NJ?) that has cautious and wild modes that cause it to play safer or bolder than usual.

I like the contempt factor idea and have mentioned it before here on BGO. Of course I'm way to lazy to do anything useful like implement in GNUBG myself. :-)
