One of the things to look for is the number of checkers remaining. The more remaining, the more likely you'd roll and ace before having borne off, the more important it becomes to avoid losing a roll because of rolling an ace, and the less important it becomes to move the pip closer to home. There are also even/odd considerations, but these play more of a roll if you are closer to your homeboard (e.g. whether to play 13/12 with the last checker or 2/1).
