When I recently used side-by-side temperature charts in GnuBg to compare my opponent’s options after two possible plays I might make, I found myself creating a table containing the difference between the resulting equities of the various rolls. My table had 21 entries, one for each possible roll of my opponent. 11: Equity( playA ) - Equity( playB )
21: Equity( playA ) - Equity( playB )
22: Equity( playA ) - Equity( playB )
31: ...For instance, in the line for 11, Equity( playA ) is the equity after I make playA, and my opponent rolls 11, and makes his best play. When the difference, Equity( playA ) - Equity( playB ), is positive, then playA is better for me than playB when my opponent rolls 11.
Once I had a table of differences, it was easy to spot the swing rolls. I did this by sorting the table based on the difference. By comparison, scanning back and forth between the original data charts was very cumbersome.
I would like to see XG perform this sort of subtraction automatically, but as they say, “If wishes were horses, then beggars would ride.”
