The situation at hand was specifically described as an example of an illegal move.

I don't accept that description. I describe it as an impossible position that I'm not going to allow to remain on the board. I don't apply the illegal move rule. I just require that the position be fixed.

Anybody can say "you can't allow an impossible position to remain", but where is that codified in the rules?

I don't care. They'll get around to it eventually.

Well, letting the person who initiated the question or conflict lift the checker and place it where it belongs, will usually favor the person who created the conflict.

Again, I really don't care. I don't follow the ... what might be called the "rules must punish wrongdoers" school. I think, here, that the point is irrelevant.

I'm just trying to point out that a case can be made for it that at least has some merit.

True. It just doesn't persuade me.
