There is no way to establish firm rules on rude or unethical behavior...only guidelines, and ultimately we must leave it up to the tournament director to determine if someone has gone too far and what penalty, if any, should be invoked.

However, as I said, we can provide guidelines, and we can give examples and have discussions so that it is widely known and understood generally what is tolerable and what is not.

The guidelines that Jeb and Chuck and I wrote attempt to do this to some extent, but certainly we can offer more concrete examples that make it more clear. For example, the following kinds of sentences could be put into the rules and guidelines for tournament play:

1. Players are expected to be courteous and respectful to their opponents, spectators, and tournament staff at all times, even when there is a misunderstanding or conflict. Failure to behave in this manner should always carry at least a warning from the TD and if repeated should result in match forfeiture and/or expulsion from the event. In very serious cases, the USBGF Ethics Committee should consider further action.

2. Players are expected to be honest at all times, both in action and words. Cheating or lying, or intentionally breaking rules to take an advantage, in any way, is not to be tolerated and should result in immediate, strong action by the TD.

3. Players are expected to use decorum at all times and not disrupt other matches, even if said disruptions are of a jovial nature. Loud arguing or cheering or other distractions should result in at least a warning from the TD and possible punitive action if continued.

We can talk all day long here about what we think "should be" but unless people in authority (TD's and Federations) take action and do things to improve the rules and standards, we are wasting our time. Hopefully, enough of those people will read these postings and be positively influenced and at least see why we need change in the rules and procedures.
