growing the game

There is a lot of talk about "growing" backgammon. In the last week alone, I've heard many different discussions about what needs to change to attract new players. Growth is measured by (new players added - existing players lost). I feel that it is far easier and less expensive to retain players who are already interested than it is to find new ones. The first thing required to grow the game is to avoid pissing off players coming to the tournaments now. I would suspend all ideas intended to appeal to new players at the expense of existing ones.
