I'm one of those odd ducks who actually enjoys pip counting. I rarely play live games, however, so I use the forum and BG books to practice. I often begin evaluating a position by trying to eyeball who is ahead in the race and by how much. Then I'll do a manual count and compare it to the count shown, so obviously my preference is to have the count shown so I have immediate feedback as to whether I am correct.
