Is this a good sign or a bad sign for popularity of bg?

I talked about backgammon in college math class today and gave pipcounting as an example of mental math calculations. I pointed out for example a pipcount for a 5 prime from 2 through 6 would be 2 + 2 + 3 + 3 + 4 + 4 + 5 + 5 + 6 + 6 but can be changed to 4 + 4 + .. + 4 which is 10 times 4 = 40. I first quickly played through a game to put context to why one might want to do that calculation.
One of the students said, "I might play that game when I get older".
