I've noticed that I tend to underestimate the gammon chances when the opponent has a high anchor and a checker on the bar...I don't have that much attacking material handy.

It's not about attacking material and it is hard to comment since you're clipping your thoughts and only you can know exactly what you mean when referring to high anchor holding games with a checker on the bar but that's not what it's about. Even if we shove a ton more material into the zone and push the second checker forward so it's under attack the gammons here are still relatively low.
