If I understand the theme of this book, it has the expert explaining to the intermediate why plays they wouldn't normally consider are correct. I don't think most intermediates would consider hitting loose with 8/4*, so I'm guessing that's the play.

That said, Blue's 4 prime is his best asset and I don't like breaking it up for an attack that is short on material for a follow up. So, for this intermediate, the choice is between 24/20 and 22/18. I'd play 22/18 because it connects the position better, duplicates White's 6s, and works well with the newly made 2pt. I know Blue is supposed to be trying to mix things up here, but coming out to the defensive bar point seems provocative enough, so I don't see the need to break up the band on the offensive side.
