I've tried this before since you frequently recommend it. However, I've found that it doesn't help.

When the position is one that I have some reasonable understanding of, then I take the time to calculate. For example, I do it when I have an ATS racing cube decision, and indeed I don't see how one can possibly approach such decisions other than by calculation.

If I'm off by a mile, however, then it's not going to help me to calculate. Yes, there is certainly an issue to be resolved. But if I'm off by a mile then the problem is that I'm not "seeing" the position correctly. What needs to be corrected is my vision, not my counting.

Similar comments apply to "rules" such as "if in doubt, make the 5pt" or "if you're not 100% sure it's a take then you must double." Such rules presume that you have a reasonably good approximate understanding of the position. They can then provide some tools to shade a decision that is already in the right ballpark. But if you have no clue then you need more extreme corrective measures.
