No, here in the UK "average" would generally be regarded as the arithmetic mean too, in non-mathematical circles.

In my statistics class a third of a century ago I was taught that there are several measures that all have a claim to being called 'average': the median, mode and arithmetic mean being the most commonly used, plus also the geometric mean, harmonic mean, root mean square and no doubt some others.

Phil's use of 'average' is, of course, the layman's term for arithmetic mean, both sides of the Atlantic. But what is this forum if you can't have a bit of pedantry?
