Pity or not?

The advantages of 'styles' in pre-bot days may have been revealed in multiple forms, but the most obvious are 1) a player who tends towards a certain style is more comfortable in that kind of game (presumably because familiarity breeds expertise) and 2) the style may be unfamiliar to the opponent, with corresponding edge to the style player.
Both of those features are true today. But in the end they translate to net or relative error rate (ER or PR) advantage over the opponent. If your contention is that absolute error rate is given too much respect, then you may have a point. But to be able to steer towards a more advantageous situation you need to have a good grasp of what the tradeoffs are of that steering. A low absolute error rate is a necessary component of that ability.
