Tim, you, as a mathematician, certainly teach classes to a younger generation. What kind of message are you trying to send them? I'm sure it's somewhere in the vicinity of "don't sell yourself short." I think Stick is 100% correct in hinting that you should try your best in estimating winning/gammon chances. It might look daunting (to a donkey like myself certainly) at first, but if you are really going to apply yourself, it is not as bad as it might seem at first.

There are certain rules of thumb that would certainly help; I personally plan to learn those by getting private lesson from professionals (Stick might be my first choice) in the future once I get to the point when there is nothing more I can learn from published works. At this point, however, I'm way too far from absorbing basic knowledge available in the well known books. This is not the case for you, so don't be afraid to try to patiently break down any given position.
