I have not read your link, although I read your post. What you describe sounds like a social game with kids. So simply forget what the "fair" value is and try to find out what the funnier value is. Put a wild card there and make it possible for comebacks. Fair value would make it a "serious game" (educational game). Moreover, if it is fair then what difference does it make which dice you pick up?
