Steve jackson's games are always unpredictable and I recommend them highly.

2. Any game is also a medium like theatre singing etc. In 99% of the cases, the medium of the games is very much against educational purposes. It is somehow like asking a pank singer to sing opera. Trying to make games educational is the reason that you will hear the kids say things like "I want a real game." It is not impossible to make a good serious game that will be fun, but it is very hard not to kill the fan in the process and you would need great game designer skills.

But you do not ask a lot if all you want to teach them is risk vs reward. You should be able to make it with the rule change you proposed. After some or many games, especially if you demonstrate the idea they will get the concept. But I would not hurry to demonstrate the idea and would wait to see if the kids can grasp it themselves. Be patient.

1. If you want recommendations about game design books let me know, I remember Timothy posted about one book around rules. There is also a free great online source around board games.
