Robertie calls this "non-commitment." There are certain positions, such as "two-way" backgames, where this is the right way to think. In most positions, though, I find that there is usually a primary game plan, and that it's important to identify it. After identifying it, you can then decide whether to pursue it aggressively or to hedge your bets somewhat.

If on the other hand I start off by trying to hedge my bets between two different game plans, then I often end up blundering because I fail to identify the key features of the position.
