I've haven't got much to add to the other responses. Clearing the 7 (versus the 8) does seem obvious to me just from having looked at these types of problems before. It's more flexible, and given a choice between blocking his 55 and his 66, blocking 6s is better.

Whether to shift-hit is a tougher choice for me, but I'm ahead in the race and don't want a gap on the 4pt, so I prefer clearing.
